Abandoned Cart Emails: Timing, Copy and Examples
Send abandoned cart emails that bring shoppers back without training them to wait for discounts. Set up Klaviyo cart abandonment flows step by step.
An abandoned cart email gives a shopper a route back to an unfinished purchase. Start with three emails: a reminder after four hours, help with their decision a day later and a final nudge after another day. Send only to people you have consent to contact, and stop the sequence when they buy or unsubscribe.
A shopper can leave because they’re unsure about delivery or the product. The cart abandonment guide covers those causes and ways to reduce them before an email is needed.
How Many Emails and When to Send Them
Send three cart abandonment emails over roughly two days as a starting schedule. These are suggested timings to test against your own orders, not a guarantee of recovery.
| Delay after the previous event | Time after checkout starts | Job | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reminder | Four hours after checkout starts | Four hours | Show the item and a return button |
| Reassurance | 24 hours after email one | 28 hours | Answer a purchase question |
| Final nudge | 24 hours after email two | 52 hours | Give one last route back |
The first email arrives while the item is still familiar, after giving the shopper time to finish unaided. Klaviyo recommends a first delay of two to four hours and a second email 20 to 48 hours later.
For furniture or another purchase that takes longer to consider, test wider gaps. Stop repeated entry into the same sequence for a defined period, such as seven days, so each visit doesn’t restart several reminders.
What to Write in Each Email
Write each email around the products left behind and one reason to return. Keep the design readable on a phone, show the selected variant and use one main button. Link that button to the shopper’s recoverable checkout.
The following abandoned cart email examples are fictional copy-ready messages. Add your platform’s dynamic cart block beneath each body. Keep your real store name, contact details and working unsubscribe link in every email footer.

Use this abandoned cart email template without invented stock warnings or countdowns. Only say stock is low when the inventory supports it. Only promise a reserved basket when your store actually reserves the items.
Start without a discount. If price is the barrier and the order still leaves enough margin, test an incentive in the final email for an eligible segment. Use a unique code with genuine conditions. Compare profit after discounts with a group receiving the same sequence without an incentive. Sending every shopper an automatic discount can teach returning customers to abandon checkout deliberately.
Setting Up Klaviyo Cart Abandonment Flows
Use Klaviyo’s pre-built checkout abandonment flow after connecting your store and confirming that checkout and order events arrive. You need flow-editing access, a consent record and a recovery link supplied by the integration.
- Open Flows and choose the pre-built abandoned checkout flow for your platform. Use Started Checkout, or Shopify’s Checkout Started metric, for this sequence.
- Select the trigger and open Profile Filters. Set Person has Placed Order zero times since starting this flow. Klaviyo checks this before each email.
- Restrict recipients to your documented consent audience. Add a re-entry limit, such as Has not been in this flow in the last seven days.
- Set a four-hour initial delay. Add the next emails with 24-hour delays between them.
- Preserve the integration’s dynamic product block and recovery button. Preview a real test checkout to confirm its image, selected item, quantity and price.
- Put messages in Manual while checking recipients and links. In your test store, abandon checkout, follow the recovery link and complete an order. Expect subsequent reminders to be skipped.
- Activate the verified sequence and turn off overlapping platform reminders.
If a product block is empty, preview an event from the correct store integration and restore its saved dynamic block. If purchasers keep receiving reminders, inspect Placed Order syncing and the profile filter. A separate Added to Cart flow needs a Started Checkout exclusion to prevent both flows contacting the same shopper.
Shopify Email’s abandoned checkout editor is now managed through Shopify Messaging under Apps, Messaging and Automations, with the subscriber audience selected by default. Mailchimp has abandoned-cart Automation Flows for supported connected stores, while its classic single-email automation is restricted to eligible existing accounts.
For Magento 2 abandoned cart email recovery, Adobe Commerce has native Email Reminder Rules under Marketing, Communications. Adobe marks these as unavailable in Magento Open Source, where you need an extension or a Klaviyo connection. Klaviyo’s Magento 2 extension supplies checkout events through a periodic sync, so allow for that delay before sending.
For WooCommerce, install and configure a cart-recovery plugin such as Abandoned Cart Pro, or use Klaviyo’s WooCommerce plugin with a checkout-triggered flow. Use one sending system to avoid duplicate reminders.
Consent and Compliance
Treat an abandoned cart email asking someone to complete a purchase as a commercial message under Australia’s Spam Act 2003. A discount is not required for the message to promote a sale.
Apply consent and unsubscribe controls to every reminder, including an email your platform labels transactional. ACMA’s Luxottica enforcement shows that order or account messages containing promotional content can also need an unsubscribe facility.
Spam Act Rules for Cart Recovery Emails
Every commercial cart recovery email must meet these requirements under ACMA’s spam guidance.
- Have consent before sending, and retain evidence of it.
- Identify your store accurately as the sender and include correct contact details.
- Include a working unsubscribe option. Honour the request within five working days, without requiring a login or extra personal information.
Starting checkout does not automatically establish inferred consent. ACMA describes inferred consent through a provable ongoing relationship where relevant marketing is reasonably expected. An existing account can contribute to that assessment, but an email typed into guest checkout is insufficient by itself. For a guest who hasn’t agreed to marketing and has no qualifying relationship, obtain express consent before sending reminders.
Keep the consent source with the recipient record. Suppress unsubscribed contacts across every sending system. Test that an unsubscribe stops the remaining sequence.
Kmart paid $1,303,500 in 2023 for marketing emails sent after customers unsubscribed. Luxottica paid $1,512,500 in 2024 for missing unsubscribe facilities and messages sent after unsubscribe requests. These are Australian-dollar penalties.
An agent answering a shopper on your own product page doesn’t send a cart recovery email or SMS. Keep that on-site help separate from outbound marketing. The Spam Act also covers certain instant messages, so website chat is not a blanket exemption for promotional messaging.
Answering the Question Behind the Cart
Give shoppers a route to product information when a reminder alone won’t resolve their doubt. Alongside the recovery button, link the product name or image to its page. They can check sizing or delivery there before returning to checkout.
On your site, shoppa answers from your catalogue and policy documents. It helps customers find and compare products, then buy in the chat without leaving your store. A shopper returning to a jacket page can ask about its materials or your delivery policy before deciding. Keep the email’s product link pointed at the product page.
Tracking Recovery Results
Track recovered revenue, placed-order rate for each email and unsubscribes. Also compare profit after incentives and the number of people who receive each message. A later email can have fewer orders because earlier messages already recovered the willing buyers.
Klaviyo’s 2024 placed-order guidance reports a 3.33% average for abandoned cart flows. Use roughly 3% to 4% as an initial planning band around that historical average, not a measured industry range or a promised result. The denominator is email recipients, not all abandoned baskets.
Fix conversion tracking before changing copy based on the revenue report.
- Confirm that completed test orders create a Placed Order event with the correct value and customer profile. Check for missing or duplicated events.
- Review the account’s Attribution settings and lookback window. For a report of shoppers brought back by a click, use click attribution and exclude machine opens and bot clicks.
- Enable Urchin Tracking Module (UTM) parameters on recovery links. Give each email a distinct content value, such as reminder or reassurance, so website analytics can distinguish them.
- In a test store, click one email and place an order within the chosen window. Inspect the profile’s message activity and attributed order. Repeat with a different email to confirm the recorded touch changes.
Klaviyo credits the last eligible message interaction within its attribution window. Its revenue total can differ from website analytics when their windows or models differ. Attribution assigns credit under a rule. It doesn’t prove the email caused every order.
If revenue is missing, repair order syncing or profile identification first. If the wrong message receives credit, inspect the interaction history and attribution window. Once those checks pass, test one timing or copy change at a time against orders and unsubscribes.
