How to Rank in AI Overviews as an Online Store
Google AI Overviews now answer many shopping questions before the click, so getting content cited decides what AI Overviews mean for your SEO.
To improve your chances of ranking in AI Overviews, make your store’s pages eligible for Google Search and answer specific buying questions with useful product facts. Start with a buying guide or category page that already helps customers choose. A clear answer can earn a citation, but Google doesn’t guarantee inclusion or a visit.
What AI Overviews Mean for SEO
AI Overviews are Google’s generated answers within search results, with links to supporting pages. On buying-guide searches, a customer can read the main advice before visiting your store. A citation and a click are separate outcomes.
Pew Research Center’s 2025 analysis studied browsing from 900 US adults and reconstructed results for 68,879 unique Google searches. Traditional-result clicks occurred on 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without one. This observational sample covers general US searches, so it doesn’t establish your store’s click loss or an Australian shopping benchmark.
For the wider change in search behaviour, read about zero-click search. Here, the practical job is to make the answer useful enough to cite and the destination useful enough to visit.
How Google Picks Sources for AI Overviews
Google finds supporting pages through its search systems, including related searches across subtopics through a technique called query fan-out. A question about choosing a suitcase can therefore lead to sources about dimensions and airline baggage rules.
Google Search Central’s AI features guidance says a supporting page must be indexed and eligible to show a search snippet. Ordinary search engine optimisation (SEO) remains relevant. Google hasn’t published a separate citation-ranking formula, and meeting its requirements doesn’t guarantee selection.
AI Overviews appear within ordinary results when Google considers the generated answer useful. AI Mode is a separate search experience for longer questions and follow-ups. Google announced its Australian rollout in English in 2025.
Both experiences draw on supporting web pages. Each experience can cite different sources. The same improvements to crawlability and useful text support eligibility in both. AI Mode also has Google’s shopping product cards, so an editorial citation and a product listing need different supporting information.
How to Get Content Cited in Google AI Overviews
Put the buying answer near the top, then explain the conditions that change it. Clear headings let readers find those conditions. A comparison table helps when several products share measurable attributes.
You need access to the page editor and your product specifications. Use Search Console access to inspect indexing, and involve whoever manages product data when facts conflict.
- Choose one customer question your page can answer. For a travel store, that might be which cabin bag suits a particular airline allowance. Keep that question separate from a general suitcase catalogue.
- Write the answer before the background. State the relevant size limit and explain which measurement includes wheels. Use the airline’s rules for the allowance and your own measurements for the bag.
- Give each subheading a distinct job. Separate bag dimensions from packing capacity and delivery. Put the answer beneath the heading in ordinary text.
- Compare products on the same basis. Show external dimensions, weight and wheel count in labelled columns. Include the measurement method if two manufacturers use different conventions.
- Replace stale claims with checked facts. Remove discontinued recommendations and repair broken product links. Show who wrote the advice and what their experience or testing actually covers.
- Inspect the published page in Search Console. Confirm Google can access the answer text and that the URL is indexed with snippets allowed. If indexing fails, resolve that issue before judging citation performance.
The following buying-guide rewrite uses a hypothetical travel store. The product names and measurements are invented to demonstrate the structure.
Before the rewrite:
Our cabin bags suit every kind of trip. The Harbour and Metro ranges give travellers plenty of choice, with designs for busy weekends and longer journeys. Browse the range to find your next bag.
After the rewrite:
For an allowance of 55 × 40 × 23 cm including wheels, the Harbour cabin bag measures 54 × 38 × 22 cm externally. The Metro bag measures 56 × 39 × 23 cm, so it exceeds that height limit. Compare each bag’s full dimensions with your airline’s allowance before buying.
The revised paragraph answers a specific choice and shows the deciding measurement. It doesn’t claim that the bag meets every airline’s rules. Use real specifications before applying this approach to your store.
Google’s people-first content guidance supports original experience and useful detail. Your own measured dimensions or clearly explained product tests give a reader information beyond a rewritten manufacturer description. Formatting helps readers use that evidence. It doesn’t establish a guaranteed citation boost.
SEO for AI Overviews on Product and Category Pages
Product pages supply individual product facts, while category pages help shoppers choose between products. Keep both accurate and connect them to relevant buying advice.
The HOTH’s 2026 ecommerce citation study classified 886 cited pages across five stores using US Ahrefs Brand Radar data. Its AI Overviews breakdown for the two largest stores contained 960 citing responses. Guides received 60.4% of the split, category pages 31.9% and product pages 7.7%. Trust pages and homepages were excluded from that split.
Those guides led this sample, but the study doesn’t measure all shopping searches or establish an Australian result. Use it to inform page priorities, not to abandon your product pages.
| Page or data source | Information to improve | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Buying guide | Choice criteria, comparisons and supported recommendations | An explanation of which product suits the customer |
| Category page | Differences within the range and links to detailed guidance | A useful destination for comparing available products |
| Product page | Specifications, stock and delivery details | Facts about the exact item the customer can buy |
| Product schema | Structured price, availability and genuine review data | Information Google can interpret for product search features |
| Merchant Center | Product feed matching your site’s prices and stock | Data for Google’s shopping experiences |
Google’s product data documentation explains how page markup and Merchant Center feeds can work together. Product schema can supply ratings and availability for eligible product results. Real reviews can also give your buying advice specific evidence about recurring customer experiences.
These mechanisms support product understanding and shopping visibility. Product markup alone doesn’t ensure an AI Overview citation. Keep schema consistent with visible content and correct feed mismatches. Follow the structured data guide for implementation details.
How to Show Up in AI Overviews and Still Earn the Click
Give the customer a reason to visit after they’ve read the answer, such as help choosing a size or checking available stock. Put that next action beside the advice so the cited page has a clear purpose.
For the hypothetical cabin-bag guide, a customer already knows which bag fits the stated allowance. The store can then let them compare colours in stock and check delivery to their postcode. A size comparison tool or photographs of the same bag packed with common items can answer the next question.
Match the destination to the citation. If Google cites your explanation of dimensions, the page must keep that explanation easy to find. A generic collection grid that hides the relevant measurements makes the customer repeat the work.
After publication, check whether visitors can complete that next action and whether the stated product facts still match the catalogue. Track recurring citation appearances through AI visibility monitoring, alongside visits and purchases. Start with one useful page and improve the buying decision it supports before repeating the work across your range.
