AI Chatbot Cost in Australia: 2026 Pricing Guide

How much does AI customer service cost for an Australian store? Compare subscription, per-conversation and build pricing in AUD before you budget.

Chatbot cost for an Australian store depends on your monthly usage, the billing unit and any helpdesk subscription you need alongside the AI. Compare the full monthly bill in Australian dollars (AUD), including tax and overages, before choosing a plan.

A conversation, a message and a resolved ticket are different things. A cheap-looking rate can produce a larger bill when one customer creates several billable events.

How Chatbot Pricing Works

Chatbot pricing usually combines a recurring subscription with an allowance, a usage charge or staff seats. The billing unit decides what makes your bill grow.

Pricing modelWhat you pay forWhat increases the bill
Flat monthly planA subscription with defined features and usageA higher tier or extra usage beyond the allowance
Per-seat helpdeskEach staff member who needs a paid seatMore staff, plus any separate AI usage
Per-conversationEach conversation that meets the vendor’s counting ruleMore conversations, including repeat contacts under that rule
Per-resolution or outcomeA completed support interaction or defined taskMore counted outcomes, plus the base plan where required
Per-tokenThe amount of text the model processes and generatesLonger messages and more context per answer

Gorgias’s billing guide says an AI-resolved conversation can count as both a helpdesk ticket and an automated interaction. Its current billing model therefore has two usage counters that can grow from the same conversation. Legacy accounts can have different terms.

Intercom combines paid helpdesk seats with Fin outcome charges. Fin can also work with an existing helpdesk without Intercom seat costs, subject to a minimum commitment. Your existing helpdesk bill still belongs in the total.

Tidio sells Lyro as a standalone agent or as an add-on. Buying a helpdesk plan doesn’t automatically give you an ongoing AI allowance large enough for your store.

Goods and services tax (GST) isn’t automatically included in an overseas software price. The Australian Taxation Office’s digital-products guidance explains when overseas suppliers must charge Australian consumers GST. Australian Government guidance on international tax says GST isn’t charged on these business purchases by Australian GST-registered businesses. Keep your business registration details correct and compare the final invoice’s tax treatment.

Typical AI Chatbot Pricing in AUD

Compare chatbot pricing in AUD against the allowance your store needs, with the same billing period and tax treatment for every quote. Store size alone doesn’t tell you how many conversations the agent must handle.

The following budget levels describe capacity and billing structure. They aren’t numeric market price bands.

Chatbase credits count messages, so 700 credits don’t promise 700 completed conversations. Crisp’s conversation figures are estimates of what its AI credits cover, not an unlimited automation allowance.

shoppa is an AI shopping agent that customers use to find, compare and buy products in one chat. It answers from your live catalogue and policy documents, then supports order tracking and returns. Compare that purchase-to-support scope with the work you’re paying another tool to handle.

shoppa’s per-session pricing gives predictable costs, while per-token pricing charges for what the agent uses. Its workspace also lets you edit and test the agent privately, then publish or roll back changes without waiting for vendor engineers. Those controls give your staff a way to maintain the agent as your catalogue changes.

For a typical retailer, shoppa is about 40% cheaper than other AI shopping agents. It has a free trial. Get a quote for your store’s usage and chosen billing model.

Outcome-Based Pricing and Per-Resolution Fees

Outcome-based pricing charges when the agent completes the event named in the contract. A counted outcome doesn’t always mean the customer explicitly confirms their problem is solved.

Intercom’s pricing page counts customer-confirmed resolutions, customers who don’t ask for more help after an answer and completed workflows, including handoffs. It says a conversation is charged once even when several questions are answered.

Gorgias’s billing guide describes an automated interaction as one fully handled without a person. Its rule requires no human involvement within 72 hours. The resolution charge can sit alongside a helpdesk ticket charge.

Here is a hypothetical comparison using planning inputs, not any vendor’s tariff. Assume 1,000 incoming conversations, an outcome fee of AUD $1 and a flat monthly quote of AUD $600. Assume the flat quote covers all 1,000 conversations, both prices exclude GST and neither has another required fee.

Resolved shareCounted resolutionsOutcome bill in AUDFlat bill in AUDCheaper option
40%400$400$600Outcome pricing by $200
60%600$600$600Equal
80%800$800$600Flat pricing by $200

The break-even point is 600 counted resolutions: the flat bill divided by the outcome fee. Above that point the flat quote is cheaper under these assumptions. A base helpdesk fee, minimum commitment or overage changes the calculation.

Before signing, get the counting rules in writing:

  • Ask which events count, including handoffs and customers who stop replying.
  • Find out whether the vendor or your team decides an outcome counts, and how you dispute one.
  • Ask whether a customer returning the next day continues the same conversation or creates another billed event.
  • Confirm whether an AI-resolved ticket also consumes the helpdesk allowance.

Chatbot Development Cost for a Custom Build

A custom chatbot has upfront development work and continuing costs for model usage, hosting and maintenance. Its quote must cover catalogue connections, order permissions, answer checks and human handover. For a hypothetical labour budget, 100 development hours at an assumed AUD $150 per hour costs AUD $15,000 before GST. Running costs remain separate, including changes to store systems and ongoing answer review. Use the custom chatbot build-or-buy comparison to decide which work your store needs to own.

Working Out Your Daily Cost

Divide the complete monthly chatbot bill by days in the billing period and by conversations handled to calculate daily cost and cost per conversation. Use the actual bill, including required add-ons and overages.

For a hypothetical 30-day month, assume an AUD $600 bill before GST and 1,000 conversations handled. The chatbot cost per day is $600 divided by 30, or AUD $20. Cost per conversation is $600 divided by 1,000, or AUD $0.60.

If only 600 conversations finish without a person, cost per automated resolution is $600 divided by 600, or AUD $1. That measure answers a different question from cost per incoming conversation.

Use the same denominator when comparing quotes. Don’t compare one vendor’s cost per message with another’s cost per resolved ticket. For the savings and payback calculation, use the chatbot return-on-investment guide.

Hidden Costs to Ask About

The hidden costs in a chatbot quote usually sit outside its base fee or appear only after traffic grows. Make the vendor price your normal month and your busiest sale period under the same contract.

  • Setup and onboarding can include catalogue preparation, integration work and staff training.
  • Usage overages can increase both AI and helpdesk charges during a sale. Confirm spending limits and whether service stops when the allowance runs out.
  • Credit auto-recharge can buy extra capacity automatically. Chatbase lets customers set a recharge threshold, so include that setting in your budget.
  • Annual billing can require a larger payment upfront. Record renewal terms and the cost of leaving before the term ends.
  • A US-dollar quote creates exchange-rate exposure and possible card conversion fees. Ask for the invoice currency and convert the whole bill, including add-ons.
  • Additional channels or staff seats can create separate charges even when the core chatbot fits within its allowance.

Request an AUD total for your expected monthly conversations, with tax treatment, counting rules and sale-period overages shown separately. That gives you comparable quotes and a bill you can budget for.
