Best PIM Software for Australian Retailers 2026
Compare PIM software on price, Shopify connectors and product data syndication to marketplaces, then shortlist the right tool for your catalogue.
Plytix is our first PIM software shortlist choice for a smaller Australian retailer moving beyond spreadsheets. Its unlimited seats let the whole product team work in one catalogue, with Shopify and BigCommerce modules available separately.
For a brand supplying many retail partners, Salsify’s syndication network deserves more weight. Akeneo suits teams that need structured enrichment and governance across channels. The deciding factor is how your product data reaches the places you sell.
How We Compared PIM Software
Compare PIM software by catalogue complexity, publishing destinations and the people who maintain the data. Product information management (PIM) software stores, enriches and distributes the product content used across sales channels.
Buyers also call it a PIM tool. Product data management software usually means engineering systems for manufacturers, where design files and technical revisions are the main concern.
Use these selection criteria.
- Catalogue size, including variants and the number of different attribute sets.
- Store connectors and the exact fields they transfer.
- Syndication to marketplaces and retail partners.
- Ease of use for everyday imports, corrections and approvals.
- Pricing model, paid modules and implementation work.
- Australian support hours and responsibility for integration faults.
A full PIM can be excessive for one store with a small range and one person editing products. Platform fields and bulk imports can handle that job. Add dedicated catalogue management software when supplier files, repeated corrections or multiple destinations consume staff time.
For a fuller explanation of the data workflow, read the guide to how PIM works.
PIM Software Compared
The six options below suit different catalogue operations. A connector logo doesn’t establish who maintains the connection or whether it transfers your custom attributes.
| PIM | Best for | Main limitation | Pricing structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plytix | Smaller teams sharing product content across stores | Store connections and feed management are separate modules | SKU-based plans with unlimited seats and paid modules |
| Akeneo | Retailers needing structured enrichment and approval workflows | Community Edition and hosted packages have different capabilities | Community Edition plus Growth, Advanced and Premium packages |
| Salsify | Brands distributing content to many retail partners | A broader network adds destination-specific configuration work | Price on request for the required platform and services |
| Pimberly | Larger multi-brand ranges with complex attributes | Annual licence scope and optional modules need a full budget | Annual tiers based on catalogue, users and storage, plus add-ons |
| Inriver | Brands with large, complex ranges and changing data relationships | Data modelling and integration need dedicated project ownership | Price on request through packaged commercial plans |
| Pimcore | Developer-led teams building a custom data platform | Your team owns development and licensing assessment | Community, Professional and Enterprise editions |
Store and Business Central connections
Treat vendor connectors, partner middleware and file exports as different purchase items. These are the documented routes that deserve attention in a shortlist:
| PIM | BigCommerce | Magento or Adobe Commerce | Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central |
|---|---|---|---|
| Akeneo | StrikeTru connector listed in Akeneo’s marketplace, built by a third party | Akeneo-built Adobe Commerce/Magento connector | Scope a named ERP connection separately |
| Salsify | Listed among its technology-partner commerce connections | Listed among its technology-partner commerce connections | Scope a named ERP connection separately |
| Plytix | Plytix’s BigCommerce module | Template export, or scheduled feed through a compatible third-party tool such as Wyomind | Codeunit is listed as a Business Central integration partner |
| Pimberly | Pimberly-built native Commerce Connector | Scope a named connection separately | Scope a named ERP connection separately |
| Inriver | BigCommerce is listed as a technology partner | Scope a named connection separately | Indirect route through the Sana Commerce partner ecosystem |
| Pimcore | Third-party iPaaS.com platform listed in the Pimcore Store | Third-party iPaaS.com platform listed in the Pimcore Store | Scope a named ERP connection separately |
Akeneo’s marketplace labels its own BigCommerce app deprecated. The StrikeTru listing is a separate third-party route. A technology-partner listing, such as Inriver’s BigCommerce entry, doesn’t by itself describe a vendor-built connector.
Salsify names BigCommerce and Adobe Magento in its technology-partner offering. Put the connector supplier and maintenance contract in the proposal. For Business Central, separate the ERP’s item records from the PIM’s selling content and define which system owns each field.
Plytix and Pimberly have Shopify App Store listings naming the vendors as developers. Plytix’s Magento route uses an exported template or a partner feed importer, so it needs different operating arrangements from a direct store module.
AI and edition differences
AI features can draft descriptions or extract attributes, but the commercial package decides what you can use. Akeneo’s package comparison includes description generation and asset extraction. Some further AI capabilities are add-ons.
Plytix includes a monthly AI-credit allowance and sells an unlimited AI module. Pimberly lists Pimberly AI as an optional annual add-on, separate from its main licence.
Salsify’s Intelligence Suite includes content generation and extraction from product assets. Inriver documents AI enrichment and data-quality capabilities. Include the required AI functions and usage allowance in each vendor’s commercial scope.
Pimcore’s developer-controlled platform suits custom enrichment workflows. Its current editions use the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL). Source access doesn’t mean every retailer qualifies for a free production licence.
Pimcore’s Community Edition has revenue-based eligibility conditions. Professional and Enterprise editions provide commercial routes. This makes Pimcore a source-available open-core choice for teams with developers, rather than an unrestricted free open-source licence for every business.
Akeneo vs Salsify
Choose Akeneo when managing the structure and quality of your own catalogue is the main project. Salsify’s retailer network makes it the stronger choice for distributing approved content to trade customers.
| Decision | Akeneo | Salsify |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Community Edition and hosted packages, with add-ons | Price on request for platform and network scope |
| Open-source route | Community Edition is available for self-hosting | Commercial hosted platform |
| Syndication | Activation connects the PIM to selling destinations | Retailer syndication is a central part of its offering |
| Daily work | Product families, completeness and enrichment workflows | Destination readiness and content distribution workflows |
| Australian delivery | Include local implementation ownership and support hours in the contract | Australian retail network through SKUvantage, now part of Salsify |
Akeneo Community Edition gives developers access to the code and standard PIM functions. It requires hosting and maintenance. Akeneo Activation supports the relevant hosted editions and excludes Community Edition, so the open-source route doesn’t include the same distribution package.
Akeneo pricing separates Growth from quote-based Advanced and Premium packages. Its package comparison lists an included Activation channel and separately licensed commerce apps. Salsify pricing is price on request, with the required network and services defined in the proposal.
For ease of use, match the workflow to the staff member doing it. A merchandiser correcting variant materials needs a different screen from a brand manager resolving retailer rejection messages. Compare those tasks using the same supplier file.
Plytix is the smaller-team alternative to shortlist against either commercial platform when you need shared enrichment and a few store connections. Its modular scope can avoid buying a larger enterprise package. Add the required modules before comparing total cost.
Best Fit by Catalogue Size and Budget
For a few thousand stock keeping units (SKUs), start with Plytix or your store’s existing catalogue tools. SKU count alone doesn’t justify a PIM purchase. Repeated supplier imports and multiple destinations are stronger reasons.
For a mid-sized multi-brand range, shortlist Akeneo and Pimberly alongside Plytix. Akeneo suits formal enrichment and approval needs. Pimberly deserves attention when complex attributes must reach several storefronts through its commerce connectors.
For an enterprise catalogue, compare Inriver, Salsify and the larger Akeneo packages. Inriver suits changing product relationships across a complex range. Salsify suits retailer distribution. Pimcore belongs on this shortlist when developers will own a custom platform.
Budget for the operating model as well as the licence. A self-hosted edition can shift spending from a subscription to development and maintenance.
Product Content Syndication to Retailers and Marketplaces
Product content syndication transforms approved PIM data into each destination’s format and sends it to that destination. A marketplace field can differ from your store field even when both describe the same product.
Akeneo Activation documents Amazon and retailer syndication. Salsify has a retailer network and Australian distribution through SKUvantage. The destination’s validation rules still govern whether a submitted product becomes a published listing.
Plytix’s connections directory lists Google Shopping and Amazon Seller Central, plus Australian destinations including Kogan, MyDeal and Myer. Those listings include feed-based routes. They don’t make every destination a direct API connector.
Pimberly lists syndication partners including Feedonomics and Linnworks. For Google and marketplace distribution, price the partner route alongside the PIM. Pimcore’s iPaaS.com integration is also a separate middleware route.
If ad-channel publishing is your main bottleneck, compare tools for managing product feeds. A PIM manages the source content, while feed software handles destination mapping and delivery.
Publishing Clean Attributes to the Agent Feed
An on-site shopping agent needs structured attributes that survive every transfer from PIM to store feed. A material value hidden in a description is less usable than a dedicated material field.
Use the same sample products for every shortlisted PIM. Include a size chart, a material list and an accessory compatibility relationship. Export them into the actual catalogue feed your agent reads and inspect the resulting fields.
The available publishing method changes the update path:
| PIM route | Update implication |
|---|---|
| Pimberly’s Shopify connector | Vendor documents event-driven, near-real-time product sync |
| Akeneo Activation | Automated exports depend on the destination’s API or flat-file method |
| Plytix’s Magento template | Manual download and upload unless a partner importer consumes the feed |
| Salsify commerce integrations | Destination readiness and publishing workflow determine release |
| Inriver connected data | Integration or direct data access determines when a consumer receives changes |
| Pimcore with middleware | The implemented connector and its schedule determine delivery |
These paths don’t establish a universal speed ranking. Measure elapsed time from saving a changed attribute to receiving it in the agent feed. Include store processing and the agent’s next catalogue refresh in that measurement.
Require a publication gate for missing material, invalid units and broken compatibility references. Akeneo has completeness and data-quality controls. Salsify uses Readiness Reports and governance workflows. Implement equivalent feed gates wherever the publishing route needs them.
For example, a hypothetical lamp with height entered as “45” must fail a rule requiring both a number and a unit. An accessory with an unknown compatible-product identifier must remain out of the feed. AI-generated attributes need the same approval rules as human-entered values.
Implementation Costs and Timelines
PIM implementation includes cleaning source data and defining who maintains it. The licence doesn’t complete that work.
Start with one representative category. Map supplier fields to your attribute model, resolve duplicated products and define parent-variant relationships. Then build the store connection and test the first destination’s rejection handling.
Your budget needs staff time for data cleanup and training. It also needs connector setup, partner fees and ongoing maintenance. A developer-led Pimcore or Akeneo Community project adds hosting and upgrades to that operating budget.
Use milestones to judge a proposal’s timeline. The first milestone is an agreed data model. The next is a working category import, followed by an approved store export and a controlled launch. A clean supplier file needs less correction than years of inconsistent spreadsheets.
Australian teams also need working-hour overlap for launch problems. Put response times, escalation ownership and the responsible implementation partner in the contract. A local partner and global vendor support perform different jobs.
Questions to Ask in a PIM Demo
Ask each vendor to complete the same tasks using your own catalogue sample. A prepared demo can hide the work that your team will face after purchase.
- Import a supplier file containing inconsistent units and duplicated variants, then show the correction workflow.
- Map your size chart and compatibility relationships to store fields without flattening them into description text.
- Reject an incomplete product before publication, then show who can approve the correction.
- Change an attribute and trace its arrival in the store and agent feed.
- Publish one product to a marketplace and handle a deliberate destination rejection.
- Export the complete catalogue and assets in formats you can use after ending the contract.
Turn those tasks into a request for proposal (RFP) before booking demos. Send your present SKU count and growth estimate, attribute samples and required destinations. List the tasks as acceptance criteria, with the exact connector supplier and transfer direction required for each system.
Require the proposal to name every paid module, implementation milestone and support responsibility. Ask for AI allowances and overage terms separately. Shortlist the vendors that can complete your real publishing workflow within your full operating budget.
