WISMO: How to Cut Order-Status Enquiries
Is “where is my order” your most common ticket? Fix it at the source with clear tracking links, proactive updates and instant answers in chat.
WISMO enquiries fall when shoppers can see what happens next without asking your team. Give clear dispatch expectations, send updates when delivery changes and make order tracking available to guest buyers.
Start by tagging order-status contacts for two weeks. Then fix one source of uncertainty at a time and compare the share of tickets about delivery.
What WISMO Means
WISMO means “where is my order”, the question a shopper asks when they can’t tell whether their purchase is progressing. It includes enquiries before dispatch and during delivery.
Gorgias reports that WISMO accounts for 18% of incoming requests on average in its own data. Treat that as a named industry reference, not a target for your store. Your ticket mix depends on your delivery promises and how clearly you explain progress.
Sale events put more orders into the delivery pipeline at once. If dispatch slows or a carrier misses its estimate, more shoppers have a reason to ask about the same missing update.
Shoppers rarely type WISMO. Use an order-status tag for messages with these meanings, even when their wording differs:
- Where is my parcel?
- Where is my order?
- What is my order status?
- Has my order shipped yet?
- I’m tracking my order, but nothing has changed.
Tag the intent across email and chat, including phone enquiries entered by staff. Keep damaged-item complaints separate so a delivery problem doesn’t disappear into a routine status report.
Why Shoppers Ask About Order Status
Shoppers ask when your dispatch promise or tracking information leaves a gap they can’t explain. Review a handful of tagged tickets beside the emails those customers received.
A vague dispatch promise leaves the shopper guessing when the parcel will leave your warehouse. State a realistic dispatch window before purchase and repeat it in the order confirmation. Explain any longer handling time for sale orders before taking payment.
A missing or broken tracking link forces the customer to find the carrier themselves. Check that the dispatch email carries the parcel’s actual tracking number and opens the right carrier record. A store order number and a carrier tracking number are different identifiers.
Silence after dispatch makes a missed delivery estimate harder to interpret. Send an update when a known delay changes the expectation, even if the parcel’s next scan hasn’t arrived.
Australia Post explains that a “Pending” status can mean an item hasn’t been scanned into its system yet. A created label alone doesn’t prove the carrier holds the parcel. Check warehouse handover records before telling a shopper their order is in transit.
Proactive Updates That Answer First
Send delivery updates when the parcel changes stage or an earlier expectation stops being reliable. You need an accurate order record, carrier tracking events and someone responsible for unresolved delivery problems.
Use this sequence to decide what each message must answer:
- Send a dispatch message after the parcel leaves your warehouse. Name the carrier and include the tracking link. If the first scan hasn’t appeared, explain what the store knows about handover.
- Send an in-transit update when useful progress appears. Describe the latest event in plain language and carry forward the carrier’s delivery estimate when one exists.
- Notify the shopper when a delay makes the earlier estimate unreliable. Explain the known change and say when your team will update them again.
- Send a delivered message after the carrier records delivery. Include access to available delivery details and a way to report a parcel the shopper can’t find.
Australia Post’s notifications include “It’s on its way”, “Attempted delivery”, “Awaiting collection” and “Delivered”. Keep those distinctions in your messages. A parcel awaiting collection still needs the shopper to act.
For a carrier delay, use wording like this fictional example:
Your parcel has passed Australia Post’s estimated delivery window. Tracking still shows it’s on its way, and there’s no revised estimate yet. We’re checking the delay and will update you within two business days. You can follow the parcel through the tracking link in your dispatch email. Reply to this email if you need help before then.
Use that follow-up promise only when your team can meet it. Name a confirmed cause if the carrier supplies one. Avoid promising a new arrival time without evidence.
For the full sequence around delivery, use the post-purchase email guide. Keep promotional messages out of a delay notice so the customer can find the answer immediately.
Self-Serve Order Tracking
Let shoppers check order status through a tracking link, an account page or a chat lookup without waiting for staff. Guest buyers need the same access to progress as customers with an account.
Start with an order lookup form that asks only for the order number and email used at checkout. Match both to the same order before showing its details. Use extra verification when the request involves a sensitive change, such as redirecting delivery.
Put the lookup link in the order confirmation and make it easy to find on your site. Signed-in customers can use their account page to select an order. The order tracking page guide covers the page layout in detail.
Link each order email to the tracking page for the carrier holding that parcel. Use Australia Post tracking for Australia Post parcels and the carrier-provided link for StarTrack consignments. Australia Post lets shoppers track with a tracking number without logging in. StarTrack’s business help explains that shoppers can track freight using their consignment note number from its homepage.
For split deliveries, give each parcel its own carrier link. A delivered first parcel mustn’t make the remaining items look delivered too.
An AI agent can answer tracking questions when it can retrieve the correct order using the supplied order number and email. A useful answer names the order’s current stage and latest carrier event. It includes the tracking link, any available delivery estimate and the next action if progress has stopped.
Keep a route to staff for missing parcels or contradictory records. A chat reply that repeats an outdated estimate leaves the original question unresolved.
shoppa is an AI shopping agent that helps customers find, compare and buy products in chat using your catalogue and documents. Its order support lets customers check status by order number, and signed-in customers see their orders across devices. Customers can pay in the same chat and ask for a person when they need help.
Before enabling a self-serve lookup, test a guest order and an email that doesn’t match it. The correct buyer must see their order’s status. A mismatched email must reveal no order details, and a delayed parcel must show the actual latest event.
Measuring the Drop in WISMO Tickets
Tag order-status tickets for two weeks before making changes, then compare that tag’s share of all tickets after each fix. Keep the tag definition and included contact channels the same.
Calculate the share by dividing WISMO tickets by all support tickets, then multiplying by 100. Count tickets consistently rather than counting every reply as a fresh enquiry.
In a hypothetical baseline, 120 of 400 tickets concern order status. That is 30%. After a tracking-link fix, 80 of 400 tickets gives a 20% share: a fall of 10 percentage points.
Total ticket volume alone can mislead you. If other contacts rise during a sale, WISMO’s share can fall even while its count stays unchanged. Keep the tagged count alongside the share and note changes in order volume or carrier delays.
Compare equal-length periods after each fix. If the share stays high, read the remaining tagged tickets to find the gap customers still face. A missing link calls for an email repair. A stale delivery estimate calls for a delay update or investigation.
Fewer routine order-status questions are one form of ticket deflection. Keep your WISMO review focused on whether shoppers receive a useful answer before needing staff.
Start with the gap that appears most often in your baseline. After changing it, place a test order and follow the emails through to tracking. Confirm that a guest buyer can find the latest status, then compare the next two-week ticket share.
