Intercom Pricing Explained for Online Stores 2026
Intercom charges for seats and for every Fin AI resolution. Work out your monthly bill with worked retail examples and Fin AI pricing explained.
Intercom pricing combines paid helpdesk seats with usage charges for Fin AI outcomes and selected channels. Forecast both before choosing a plan. Our pricing explainers cover the billing units used by retail software. A team can keep the same seat count and pay more as Fin handles more conversations.
Intercom bills in USD. For an Australian budget, convert the forecast using your finance team’s USD-to-AUD assumption and allow for payment-provider conversion charges. Keep applicable taxes separate from the software subtotal.
Intercom Seat Plans
Intercom has Essential, Advanced and Expert plans, with different per-seat rates for monthly and annual billing. An annual rate expressed per month is a budgeting equivalent. It carries an annual commitment.
Choose the tier from the support work your staff must do. Fin usage remains a separate charge on every tier.
| Plan | Support features | Retail situation |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Shared inbox, tickets, public help centre and pre-built reports | One team handling customer questions in a common queue |
| Advanced | Workflows, multiple inboxes, round-robin assignment and custom reports | Separate teams handling delivery issues and product enquiries |
| Expert | Multibrand messaging, service-level agreements and identity controls | Several brands sharing a support operation with formal access rules |
Full seats let staff reply to customers. Lite seats support limited internal collaboration, so do not substitute them for customer-facing staff in a forecast.
Fin AI Pricing Per Resolution
Fin AI pricing is metered by outcomes. A resolution is one outcome type. Intercom’s outcome table describes it as “No further help is requested” after the last AI answer. Intercom’s definition requires an answer followed by customer confirmation or departure without a request for further help. These are confirmed and assumed resolutions respectively.
A greeting alone or an unanswered clarifying question does not count. If the customer returns to the same conversation for more help, Intercom deducts the resolution charge. Several answered questions in one conversation still produce at most one outcome charge.
Outcomes also include successfully completed Procedures configured to hand off to a person or workflow. Ordinary escalation because Fin cannot answer is different. A forecast based only on resolved conversations can miss those billable Procedure handoffs.
For ecommerce, a product recommendation can count as a resolution. Subsequent cart activity and checkout-link clicks add no separate outcome charge. Sales qualification has its own outcome category and rate, so keep it separate if enabled.
Fin can run over another supported helpdesk without Intercom seat charges. Outcome charges and minimum commitments still apply, alongside the helpdesk subscription you already pay. Intercom’s plan guide limits Fin for Ecommerce to Intercom plans, so standalone support pricing does not include that commerce package.
Add-Ons That Change the Total
Intercom’s optional add-ons use different billing units. Copilot charges per enabled agent for unlimited use. Proactive Support Plus combines a monthly fee with charges beyond its included message allowance. Pro adds performance analysis and Operator usage, with allowances and additional credits.
Custom reports are included in Advanced and Expert. Separate those tier features from optional Pro analysis when reading a quote. Outbound email campaigns and paid messaging channels need their own usage rows. Replies to inbound customer emails are included.
Intercom phone pricing combines number rental with usage. Its Australian schedule lists local, toll-free and mobile numbers, each with a monthly number fee and its own inbound-minute rate. Outbound rates depend on the destination. Recording and Messenger calls have separate minute charges.
Phone minutes include queue and hold time. Intercom rounds each call up to the next minute, so a call lasting two minutes and 35 seconds uses three billable minutes. Phone rates exclude applicable taxes. Australian numbers are supported, although a particular number type can run out of stock.
Keep Fin Voice outcomes separate from telephony. The chat-and-email outcome rate does not establish the Voice rate.
Worked Examples for Retail Teams
Use a worksheet with one row for each charge. Let S be the monthly equivalent of your chosen full-seat rate, R the chat-and-email resolution rate and A all add-on and channel charges.
| Illustrative team | Seat component | Resolution component | Monthly subtotal before tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three full seats, 1,500 resolutions | 3 × S | 1,500 × R | 3 × S + 1,500 × R + A |
| Ten full seats, 8,000 resolutions | 10 × S | 8,000 × R | 10 × S + 8,000 × R + A |
These examples assume all billable Fin outcomes are resolutions. Add separate rows for other outcome categories. For standalone Fin, remove the Intercom seat component and retain your existing helpdesk cost. Apply the contracted outcome minimum, then add excess usage and separate add-on or channel charges.
Suppose the smaller team has 3,000 conversations. At a 50% resolution rate, the forecast contains 1,500 resolutions. At 70%, it contains 2,100. The extra Fin charge is 600 × R, even when staffing stays unchanged.
For 10,000 conversations, moving from 80% to 90% adds 1,000 resolutions. That increases the usage component by 1,000 × R. Compare that increase with the staff time released, using your own handling-time records.
Copy the worksheet into your budget and add rows for Copilot seats, number rental and call minutes. Put outbound messaging in its own rows. Convert the final USD subtotal to AUD once, so every row uses the same exchange-rate assumption.
Budgeting Tips Before You Sign
Set Fin alerts and a hard outcome limit in Settings > Subscription > Usage. Alerts notify billing contacts. A hard limit stops Fin when the limit is reached. A contracted minimum still applies even if actual use is lower.
Intercom recalculates usage limits hourly, so allow room between an alert and the maximum budget. Prepare an inbox or workflow path for conversations that arrive after Fin stops. Fin Voice limits do not cap separate telephony charges.
Before signing, record the billing commitment, full-seat count and outcome minimum in the budget. Include seasonal conversation growth. After the first billing period, reconcile the invoice against outcome types and paid-channel usage, then adjust the next forecast.
For the purchasing decision, compare shopping and support workflows. If the forecast exceeds your budget, explore Intercom Fin alternatives for retailers.
