How ChatGPT Shopping Works for Australian Retailers

ChatGPT now recommends products and compares prices. This is how ChatGPT merchants get listed, what shopping research shows and what Australians see.

ChatGPT shopping uses a customer’s request to find products, compare options and send them to retailers. For Australian stores, public product pages can appear through ChatGPT web search. Product visibility and eligibility for OpenAI’s direct merchant programme are separate questions.

What ChatGPT Shows When Someone Shops

ChatGPT can show product cards with pictures and prices, alongside links to retailers. OpenAI describes side-by-side comparisons that let shoppers weigh product features against price. Shopping research goes further by building a buyer’s guide around the customer’s requirements.

In one signed-in session, requests for Australian running shoes and cordless vacuums returned product cards with retailer names and prices. The vacuum response also included a comparison table. Those responses show what appeared for those requests, without establishing availability for every Australian account.

OpenAI documents general web search across ChatGPT plans. Its merchant page lists dedicated shopping availability in the US. Australian product recommendations don’t establish that an Australian store is eligible for every merchant integration.

OpenAI prioritises merchant-owned checkout over standalone buying inside ChatGPT, so Australian retailers mustn’t treat Instant Checkout as a local checkout channel.

Inside ChatGPT Shopping Research

ChatGPT shopping research asks follow-up questions, searches retail sources and builds a buyer’s guide with reasons for its recommendations. A customer can clarify their budget or remove products as the research runs. The guide draws on multiple stores, so it can compare options outside any one retailer’s range.

For example, a hypothetical customer asks for running shoes under A$200 delivered to Perth. Follow-up questions can establish the running surface and size. A retailer’s product page then needs enough information to answer those requirements, including the relevant variant and its availability.

Keep specifications readable on public product pages. Update prices when promotions change and show stock for each variant. OpenAI says research can skip retailers that block automated access. Allow its search crawler through both the site’s crawl rules and hosting security controls.

How ChatGPT Chooses Products

ChatGPT chooses products for the customer’s request and context, using structured product information and other content. OpenAI’s guidance includes descriptions and prices from data providers. Shopping research also reads public retail pages, while review summaries draw on public reviews.

According to OpenAI, organic product results aren’t paid placements or influenced by its partnerships. Ads are separate. Reviews and ratings shown in shopping results aren’t verified by OpenAI.

A customer who names a budget changes what counts as relevant. Complete product details give ChatGPT more information to match that request, but eligibility doesn’t guarantee placement. The guide to generative engine optimisation explains how to make useful answers available on your site.

AI Price Comparison and Deal Finder Behaviour

ChatGPT’s AI price comparison can show several sellers of the same product. OpenAI says it tries to identify the lowest price it knows about in product details and merchant rankings. The initial card can show a different seller’s price. An AI deal finder result therefore isn’t proof of the lowest total cost across every store.

Delivery changes the amount a customer pays. In a hypothetical comparison, A$160 shoes with A$20 delivery cost more than A$175 shoes with free delivery. Compare the same size and variant, with taxes and fees included, before treating an offer as cheaper.

OpenAI lists availability, price and quality among merchant-ranking factors, along with whether the seller makes the product or is its primary seller. Its feed specification supports shipping charges and, with the required integration setup, store review aggregates. Those fields don’t promise a particular ranking or a calculated checkout total.

Keep sale prices and stock identical in the feed and on your site. Use the same delivery charges in both places. Supply supported shipping charges in the same currency as the product price. A missing shipping charge means unknown, not free delivery. Refresh the feed when a sale begins or ends.

How Merchants Get Listed

Merchants can apply through OpenAI’s merchant page to share a product feed. A feed supplies structured catalogue data so ChatGPT can represent products with accurate attributes. OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogues are already integrated, without a separate application from each merchant.

An Australian retailer must distinguish catalogue integration from market access. OpenAI’s standard feed upload targets the US. Adding an Australian currency or sizing label doesn’t change the destination market. Additional markets require OpenAI to configure the integration for them.

A store without a direct feed can still make its public website eligible for ChatGPT search. Allow OAI-SearchBot access and publish clear product information with working product links. Keep delivery destinations visible so a recommendation doesn’t send customers to an offer they can’t buy.

For the separate work of preparing structured catalogue data, read the ChatGPT product feed guide. The broader AI shopping channel guide covers the other places customers can discover products.

What It Means for Traffic and Sales

ChatGPT can send a customer to a retailer through a product link or a cited web page. OpenAI’s merchant guidance puts the purchase on the retailer’s own site or app. Once the customer arrives, your store controls the product page and checkout.

In your analytics, filter the traffic-source report for the hostname chatgpt.com. Inspect the landing pages and compare those sessions with recorded purchases. If a link carries campaign parameters, include its source value in the report as well.

Referral visits show that customers reached your site. They don’t establish that ChatGPT caused additional sales. Use your own purchase events and order revenue to judge the channel, and start by checking which product pages those customers reach.
