Generative Engine Optimisation for Online Stores
Want AI tools to recommend your products? Learn how generative engine optimisation works, which AI search optimization tools help and what to fix first.
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) makes your store’s content and product data easier for AI tools to find, understand and cite in answers. Start with accurate product facts and readable pages. Then improve the feeds that supply shopping results and the evidence shoppers use to compare your products.
If competitors appear when customers ask what to buy, look at the questions those answers resolve. A product page that only says “premium quality” gives an assistant little reason to recommend it for a specific need.
What Generative Engine Optimisation Means
Generative engine optimisation is the work of making information useful to AI-generated answers, including recommendations about what to buy. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) means much the same. You’ll also see AI search optimisation and large language model (LLM) optimisation used for this work on AI-driven search engines.
For an online store, the answer might name a product, cite a buying guide or compare delivery options. A store therefore needs clear catalogue facts as well as helpful articles. The assistant needs to know which item meets the shopper’s requirements and whether the store can supply it.
GEO doesn’t create a separate set of guaranteed ranking tricks. Google Search Central says its AI search features use the existing search requirements and need no special AI markup. Its guidance on AI features also makes clear that eligibility doesn’t guarantee inclusion. For Google-specific advice, use the guide to AI Overviews for online stores.
How AI Tools Pick Which Stores to Cite
AI tools can draw on store pages and merchant feeds, then use outside sources to answer questions about suitability or reputation. OpenAI describes ChatGPT shopping research as using merchant data, public product information and other retail sources.
The sources have different jobs. A product feed supplies current item details. Product pages explain specifications and availability.
Customer reviews can describe use over time, while forums can reveal questions buyers struggle to answer. News and specialist reviews can supply outside context about a product or brand. The exact mix depends on the assistant and the question.
You control your catalogue, pages, policies and feed updates. You can invite real customer reviews and give journalists accurate information, but you don’t control their verdicts. Publishing invented reviews or unsupported “best” claims creates unreliable evidence.
Access comes before citation. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is its search crawler and recommends allowing it in robots.txt and through the site’s security controls. GPTBot controls training access separately. Allowing search crawling doesn’t require you to allow training crawling, and neither setting promises a recommendation.
Optimising Product and Category Pages for AI Answers
Write product pages so a shopper can decide whether an item meets their needs without guessing. Give dimensions with units and identify materials, compatibility and included accessories. Put sizing guidance beside variants. Explain where you deliver, how delivery is calculated and which refund conditions apply.
Consider this hypothetical description before a rewrite:
A premium everyday backpack with plenty of space. Perfect for work and travel.
A fact-based replacement could read:
This 20-litre backpack has a padded compartment for laptops up to 14 inches. It weighs 650 grams and has a polyester outer. The zip opening is not waterproof. Delivery is available across Australia, with the charge shown at checkout.
Use those details only if they’re true for the item. The rewrite answers capacity, device fit and weather questions. A sizing table, care instructions or measured dimensions can answer the next question.
Category pages need comparisons that help customers choose within the range. For backpacks, explain when a smaller bag suits a commute and when a larger bag is needed. Compare laptop compartments and carry capacity using the actual products. Keep claims such as waterproof separate from water-resistant.
A Shopify store can edit product information and search listings in its admin, then use theme sections for specification tables. Shopify documents automatic sitemap generation and built-in search features. Theme-generated product structured data needs to agree with the visible page.
On WooCommerce, edit product attributes and descriptions, then use the store’s theme or SEO plugin settings to manage product structured data. Avoid adding a second copy of product markup through another plugin. Test the output with Google’s Rich Results Test, and confirm price and stock match the page. Google documents product structured data and merchant feeds as ways to supply product information. The guide to AI-ready product data explains the catalogue fields in more detail.
Gen AI Optimisation for Shopping Queries
Shopping queries ask an assistant to match products to constraints, while information questions ask it to explain a subject. “What is a laptop compartment?” needs an explanation. “Find a backpack for a 14-inch laptop that delivers to Perth” needs device fit and delivery coverage.
Those constraints must appear in the product data. A useful feed identifies the purchasable variant and supplies its current price, availability and product URL. Structured data on the page describes the same item for systems that read the site. A feed carries catalogue updates directly, while the page gives shoppers the fuller explanation.
For ChatGPT product discovery, follow this order:
- Make product pages publicly accessible and allow OAI-SearchBot through your robots.txt and security controls. Open a page without signing in and confirm its product facts are readable.
- Correct product identifiers and variant relationships. Match each item’s feed details to its page, including currency and stock.
- Use OpenAI’s merchant application route for direct feed onboarding. Its Agentic Commerce documentation limits onboarding to approved partners, so an application alone doesn’t publish a catalogue.
- Once approved, use the documented file-upload or API delivery method. Validate every required field and submit one record per purchasable item or variant.
- Keep the feed current as products change. Compare an updated item in the feed with the live page before treating the update as complete.
OpenAI’s product feed specification separates discovery from advertising and checkout. Supplying discovery data doesn’t automatically enable either of those services. For Shopify merchants, OpenAI says product data is integrated through Shopify Catalog. Keep that catalogue accurate even when a platform handles the connection.
If a product is missing, first check whether its page is blocked or its feed record has errors. If the assistant reports an old price, compare the feed update with the current page. Fix the conflicting source before rewriting unrelated content.
Choosing GEO Tools
Choose GEO tools by the decision you need help making. A prompt tracker repeats selected shopper questions to measure brand mentions. A citation monitor records which pages an assistant uses. A content grader suggests changes to a page, but its score is the vendor’s assessment of the content.
A brand visibility tool can measure mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers across its supported models. It can show when another store appears and which source supports the answer. It cannot force the assistant to recommend your store or turn a mention into a sale.
For Australia, OtterlyAI’s country-support table lists Australian monitoring across those assistants. Its pricing page includes ChatGPT and Perplexity in the base plans, with Gemini as an add-on. The Lite plan has 15 prompts, so it cannot hold a twenty-prompt audit unchanged. Choose a plan against your actual prompt set and required assistants, then compare export access and tracking frequency.
Australian coverage means more than a tool being available to buy here. The monitoring must use the Australian market and preserve local constraints such as Perth delivery and AUD pricing. Choose a tool that shows the answer and cited URL so you can inspect the result behind its score.
Tracking follows the page and feed improvements. Use the AI visibility guide to measure mentions, or compare AI visibility tools when manual checks take too much time.
What to Fix First
A small team can start with a twenty-prompt audit and a short list of product fixes, without buying a GEO subscription. You need access to edit catalogue information and policies. A developer may be needed if your theme hides product facts or security controls block search crawlers.
- Write twenty questions your shoppers ask before buying. Include category choices, product comparisons, sizing questions and local delivery needs. Use actual customer enquiries where possible.
- Ask the main assistants those questions and record the stores and pages they cite. Include your Australian location in the prompts. Keep the wording so you can repeat the same questions.
- Read your relevant pages against the answers. Record missing facts and contradictory claims. Give priority to incorrect stock, unclear specifications and delivery information that affects a purchase.
- Fix the highest-value product pages, then the category comparisons customers use to choose between them. Bring the feed and structured data into agreement with the revised pages.
- Repeat the questions each month. Inspect whether answers use the corrected facts and whether they cite the relevant page. Record referral visits separately from mentions.
Treat the first month as a repair and baseline period. Repeated monthly checks can show direction over subsequent months, but there is no fixed time to earn a citation. Crawling, feed updates and the assistant’s retrieval choices follow different schedules. OpenAI says search systems can take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt change. That describes access settings, not a deadline for product recommendations.
Your first completed check is a product page and feed that agree on the facts a shopper needs. If answers still omit your store, inspect the cited pages for a specific missing answer. Add that useful information where it belongs, then repeat the same shopper question at your next monthly check.
