How Perplexity Shopping Works for Australian Retailers

Perplexity lets shoppers research and buy in one place. Find out what Buy with Pro offers, who can use it here and how merchants get listed.

Perplexity shopping turns a customer’s question into product suggestions and comparisons drawn from web sources and product data. Australian shoppers can use Perplexity to research a purchase, but its help centre limits checkout inside Perplexity to US users. For Australian retailers, the practical opportunity is discovery and visits to your store.

What Perplexity Shows Shoppers

Perplexity answers shopping questions with explanatory text and, in its shopping experience, product cards that help customers compare options. Its answers cite web sources, so a shopper can follow a reference to a product page or review. Product suggestions depend on the request and the information available about each item.

Perplexity’s shopping help says it ranks listings using authority and relevance. It also uses past searches and saved preferences to refine recommendations. Detailed stock information and specifications help it assess whether a product fits the question. Joining a programme doesn’t guarantee a recommendation.

For example, a shopper researching a lightweight rain jacket can ask which fabrics suit humid weather, then compare two named jackets. A useful product page states the fabric and weight, explains the intended use and shows the available sizes. That gives the answer engine something specific to draw on.

In Australia, use the distinction between a cited research answer and a checkout-enabled product card. Perplexity’s ordinary web research can help customers investigate products. Its shopping checkout has a separate geographic restriction, so a US checkout demonstration doesn’t establish the same buying experience for an Australian customer.

Checkout Inside Perplexity

Buy with Pro is Perplexity’s original checkout feature for eligible products and US Pro subscribers. Customers saved their payment and shipping details, then bought without going to the retailer’s checkout. Perplexity’s current help centre describes the checkout experience as Instant Buy.

Instant Buy is available to US users, with Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max excluded. A Pro subscription is no longer the general access requirement described in that help page. Only products from compatible merchants have the Instant Buy option, and orders go to the merchant for fulfilment.

Checkout inside Perplexity isn’t open to Australian shoppers under those stated eligibility rules. An Australian retailer can still receive a customer who follows a source or product link and buys on its own site. Treat that visit as referral traffic when assessing this channel.

Joining the Perplexity Merchant Programme

Perplexity introduced its merchant programme so retailers could share product specifications directly for shopping discovery and checkout integration. Its launch announcement described a Shopify integration covering businesses globally that sell and ship to the US. An Australian business serving US customers fits that geographic description, but this doesn’t establish automatic programme admission.

A product feed and a public product page are different routes to discovery. A feed supplies structured catalogue details through an integration. Perplexity’s web search can also draw on public pages without the retailer joining a merchant programme. Keep product descriptions specific and make the available variants clear on those pages.

The former merchant programme URL now opens a Perplexity Computer sign-up page for managing store operations. That sign-up is a different task from submitting a catalogue for shopper recommendations. Shopify’s Perplexity connector likewise lets an owner manage an existing store. Connecting it doesn’t establish a Perplexity shopping listing or Australian checkout access.

For a Shopify store, use the AI sales-channel settings documented in Shopify admin to manage supported shopping channels. Keep that work separate from granting a store-management connector access to products or orders. For any store, accurate public product pages remain a useful first step that doesn’t depend on merchant programme admission.

Is Perplexity Worth Your Time

Perplexity deserves more work when its visitors show purchase intent in your own analytics. Compare Perplexity referrals with ChatGPT referrals and Google traffic over the same period. Look at the landing pages, completed purchases and revenue attributed to each source. Google traffic includes broader search activity, so a raw visit count alone isn’t a like-for-like channel comparison.

Start with one low-effort action: filter your acquisition report for referrals containing Perplexity’s domain and inspect the product pages those visitors enter. If the report shows few visits, avoid drawing a conversion conclusion from a handful of sessions. A missing referral also doesn’t prove that no customer researched your store in Perplexity.

Use the guide to ChatGPT shopping and the guide to Google’s AI shopping in Australia to understand the other channels. For mentions that don’t produce a visit, read about tracking your store’s AI visibility. The wider AI shopping guides cover how these buying journeys differ.

Choose one product page receiving Perplexity visits and fill any missing specifications or delivery information. Then watch whether referrals and purchases from that page change before committing time to a separate integration.
