FAQ Page Template: How to Write One Shoppers Use
Shoppers and AI assistants both read your FAQ page. Use this FAQ page template, with design tips and examples, to answer the questions that stall sales.
An FAQ page works when it answers the questions shoppers ask before buying and after delivery, with a clear next step in each answer. Start with your support messages, group the recurring questions and write short answers that match your store policies.
The template below gives you a structure to copy into a document or your store editor. You’ll need your delivery and returns policies, product guidance and access to your site’s page editor before publishing it.
The Job Your FAQ Page Does
Your frequently asked questions page helps shoppers resolve pre-sale doubts and routine after-sale questions without sending another email. Before a purchase, they want to know whether an item suits them and when it will arrive. Afterward, they need to track it or resolve a problem.
Give each answer enough detail for the customer to act. An answer to “Can I change my order?” needs the permitted stage and the contact route. “Contact us” alone leaves the customer guessing whether a change is possible.
Keep personal order details behind the appropriate account or tracking process. A public FAQ explains how to find an order, while the order system supplies that customer’s status.
Finding the Questions Shoppers Actually Ask
Collect repeated questions from support emails, chat logs and site search before deciding what goes on the page. Keep the customer’s wording when it describes the problem clearly.
- Review a recent batch of support conversations. Record the question and whether it came before or after a purchase.
- Merge questions that need the same answer. “Where’s my parcel?” and “How do I track delivery?” can share one tracking answer.
- Inspect site searches that return no useful result. Searches for “delivery Perth” or “dishwasher safe” can reveal missing guidance.
- Ask staff which answers change by product or delivery region. Keep those conditions beside the answer they affect.
- Prioritise questions that block a purchase or repeatedly lead to a support request. Put those first within each group.
A working FAQ sheet can have columns for question, approved answer, policy link, responsible person and review trigger. Use the same structure as an FAQ document template in Word or a spreadsheet. Remove customer names and order details from the working examples.
FAQ Page Template
Group your FAQ page template by ordering, delivery, returns, products and account. Use the sample answers below as a starting point, then replace any operating rule that differs from your store.
These are hypothetical answers for a store with guest checkout and emailed tracking. The delivery estimates are examples, not promises you can copy unchanged. Link each delivery or returns answer to your own full policy when you publish it.
Ordering
Do I need an account to place an order?
You can check out as a guest. Enter your email address at checkout so we can send your order confirmation and delivery updates.
Can I change an order after placing it?
Contact our support team with your order number and the change you need. We can change an order before it enters packing. Once packing starts, we’ll explain the options available for that order.
Delivery
How long does delivery take?
We dispatch in-stock orders within two business days. Standard delivery usually takes three to seven business days after dispatch. Your checkout estimate accounts for your delivery address. Read our shipping policy for regional delivery and other exceptions.
How do I track my order?
We email your tracking link when your parcel leaves our warehouse. Open that link for the carrier’s latest delivery status. Contact support with your order number if you haven’t received the dispatch email. Read our shipping policy for the delivery process.
Returns
What if my product is faulty?
Contact support with your order number and a description of the fault. We’ll assess the problem and arrange the remedy required under Australian Consumer Law. Our returns policy explains the process and keeps your consumer guarantee rights intact.
Can I return an item if I change my mind?
Our returns policy explains which change-of-mind returns we accept, including any time limit and condition requirements. Those rules don’t limit your rights for a faulty product under Australian Consumer Law.
Products
How do I choose the right size?
Use the size guide on the product page and compare its measurements with your own. Contact support if a measurement is missing or you need help interpreting it.
Where can I find care instructions?
The product page lists care instructions for that item. Keep any care label supplied with the product and follow its instructions during use and cleaning.
Account
How do I sign in to my account?
Open the account link in our store’s navigation and follow the sign-in instructions. Use the same email address you used when placing your order.
How do I get help with an account problem?
Contact support from the contact page and describe the problem. Never send your password or full payment-card details in a message.
The ACCC’s consumer guarantee guidance explains rights that store policies can’t remove. Keep change-of-mind conditions separate from faulty-product remedies. For a major product failure, customers can choose a refund or replacement. A minor failure generally gives the business an opportunity to fix the problem.
Build the page in Shopify without an app
A Shopify FAQ can use your theme’s existing sections or a normal page template without an extra app. Section names and available blocks depend on the theme and its version. A dedicated FAQ section isn’t available in every theme.
- Create a page for your FAQ in Shopify’s page editor and add your approved content.
- Open Online Store, then Edit theme beside the relevant theme. Choose Pages in the template selector.
- Create a separate page template for the FAQ if your theme supports it. This keeps FAQ-specific sections off other pages using the default template.
- Add your theme’s FAQ section if it has one. Otherwise, use a collapsible-content section or collapsible rows where available. A plain text page also works.
- Add one question and its complete answer per row. Assign the new template to your FAQ page in the admin and save.
- Preview the page on a phone, open every answer and follow its links. Add the FAQ to your store navigation so shoppers can find it.
If the questions appear on unrelated pages, inspect which template those pages share. Assign the FAQ its own template. If collapsible blocks aren’t available, publish readable headings and answers in the normal page content instead.
FAQ Page Design That Helps Shoppers Scan
FAQ page design helps shoppers find their question before they read the answer. Use clear category names and put the most frequent question first in each group.
For a short page, category links at the top can be enough. A large help centre needs search that returns the relevant answer for everyday wording such as “late parcel”. Test common phrases from your support messages, including misspellings where your search supports them.
Expandable answers keep a long page manageable. Make the whole question row easy to tap and show whether it’s open. Keep the answer text available in the page rather than loading it only after a click. Shoppers must also be able to open answers with a keyboard.
On mobile, use a single column and ordinary text size. Keep policy links inside the answer and separate them enough to tap accurately. Avoid a row of small category tabs that needs sideways scrolling.
After publishing, ask someone unfamiliar with the page to find the tracking answer on their phone. They must be able to reach it, understand it and open the next step without staff explaining the layout.
FAQ Page Examples From Australian Stores
Koala and frank green show how an Australian store can organise help around customer tasks. Borrow the organisation and answer pattern, then use your own policies and product facts.
Koala: Separate delivery and returns
Koala’s contact and FAQ page places help search above named paths for shipping and delivery, returns and product questions. It also separates order actions from its article categories. This gives someone with an existing order a direct route without making them read every help topic.
An adaptable delivery sample is “How do I track my order?” Answer with the tracking location, when the link becomes available and the action to take if it’s missing. The hypothetical tracking answer in the template shows this sequence. Supply your own contact route and link to your shipping policy.
frank green: Group help by the task
frank green’s help centre groups ordering, shipping and delivery, product information and returns into separate cards. Track-order and return-order actions appear above the categories. Product guidance has its own space, so a care question doesn’t sit among refund instructions.
An adaptable returns sample is “What if my product is faulty?” Give the contact route and the information needed to assess the fault. Explain that the remedy follows Australian Consumer Law, then link to the full returns policy. Keep any voluntary change-of-mind offer in a separate answer.
A smaller store can use these same category names with simple headings. A help-centre layout only earns its space when it helps customers reach the answer or complete a task.
Writing Answers an AI Shopping Assistant Can Use
An AI shopping assistant may use your FAQ page as a source, so each answer needs enough context to make sense on its own. Name the product group or service when the rule applies only to part of your store.
“Delivery takes five days” leaves out the starting point and destination. A usable answer distinguishes dispatch from transit and identifies where the estimate applies. Keep changing stock or order status in the system that holds it, rather than writing a fixed answer in the FAQ.
When your chat tool imports pages, check which page it imports and how a saved edit reaches its answers. Remove superseded copies from its knowledge sources. Ask the tool the same delivery and faulty-product questions after an update and compare its answers with the live policy.
For related documents and instructions, use the guide to organising an AI knowledge base. A complete FAQ answer can link to more detail while still explaining the immediate next step.
FAQ Schema Markup and What It Still Does
FAQ schema is structured data that labels the questions and answers on a page for software such as search engines. The Schema.org type is FAQPage, with a Question and an acceptedAnswer for each entry.
Google no longer shows FAQ rich results for any site. Its Search documentation changelog records the feature’s retirement. The older restriction to authoritative health and government sites is no longer an eligibility route for a retailer.
FAQPage markup can still describe the page’s question-and-answer structure to software that reads Schema.org. It doesn’t guarantee search visibility, AI citations or a special search appearance. Keep existing accurate markup if it helps your systems, but prioritise useful visible answers over adding it for a retired Google feature.
This short JSON-LD example uses two hypothetical store questions. Publish the same questions and answers visibly on the FAQ page before adding matching markup.
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Do I need an account to place an order?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "You can check out as a guest. Enter your email address at checkout so we can send your order confirmation and delivery updates."
}
},
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Where can I find care instructions?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "The product page lists care instructions for that item. Keep any care label supplied with the product and follow its instructions during use and cleaning."
}
}
]
}
To install JSON-LD, your theme or developer places it in a script element with the type application/ld+json. Keep a single owner for the markup so an app and the theme don’t generate conflicting copies.
Use the validators for different checks.
- Open the Schema Markup Validator. Enter the public FAQ URL or paste the code. Confirm it recognises
FAQPageand both questions without syntax errors. - Open Google’s Rich Results Test. Enter the page URL to check any structured data types Google still supports. It no longer provides an FAQ rich-result eligibility check.
- Compare the parsed questions and answers with the visible page. Fix any mismatch, then repeat validation after the edit.
A result with no supported Google rich results doesn’t establish that FAQPage markup is malformed. Use the Schema Markup Validator for that format check and keep the visible answers as the source of truth.
Keeping Policy Answers Consistent
Link every returns and delivery answer to the full policy, and update its summary whenever that policy changes. A policy link gives shoppers the exceptions and details, while the FAQ supplies the immediate answer.
Use the returns policy template and shipping policy template to prepare those source policies. Keep the FAQ focused on the question and avoid copying the whole policy into several answers.
Assign one person to approve policy changes and one place to store the current wording. When a rule changes, update the policy first, then its FAQ summaries and any imported chat knowledge. Recheck structured data that repeats the answer.
Before publishing, compare each summary with its policy and follow every next-step link. If customers still email the same question, inspect whether the answer is missing, hard to find or missing a condition. Fix that specific failure and repeat the phone check with the question that caused it.
