Shopify AI Tools: Sidekick, Magic and Where They Stop
Find out what Shopify Sidekick and Shopify Magic can do in your admin today, what the Shopify AI Toolkit adds, and where you still need other tools.
Shopify AI helps merchants write store content, analyse sales and carry out admin tasks through Sidekick and the tools commonly called Shopify Magic. The Shopify AI Toolkit helps developers build and manage Shopify software from their coding tools. Shopper conversations use a separate feature, such as the optional Shopify Inbox agent.
You can hand over a draft or a report request. You still approve store changes and check the facts in generated copy.
What Shopify AI Includes Today
Shopify’s built-in AI appears both in the Sidekick conversation and beside the fields you edit. Shopify’s Help Centre now describes product text, email text and media generation through Sidekick, so Magic and Sidekick aren’t cleanly separate toolboxes.
| Feature | Where you use it | Plan or access requirement | Who uses the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sidekick chat and reports | Sidekick panel across the admin, including Analytics | Included with your Shopify plan; permissions and feature limits apply | Merchant and staff |
| Product and email text, commonly called Shopify Magic | Product description editor and Shopify Messaging campaign editor | Sidekick’s included text tools in supported workflows; product text generation requires desktop | Merchant reviews it, then customers read it |
| Media generation | File editor | Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus under Shopify’s stated plan requirement | Merchant reviews the image before publication |
| AI-generated themes | Online Store theme management | English storefront during a trial or on Basic, Grow or Advanced; generation uses mobile | Customers see the published theme |
| AI-generated theme blocks | Theme editor | Trial, Basic, Grow, Advanced or Plus with a compatible theme and required permissions | Customers use the published block |
| Sidekick-generated admin apps | Sidekick’s app generation mode on desktop | Grow, Advanced or Plus | Merchant and staff inside the admin |
| Shopify Inbox agent | Inbox settings and the online-store chat widget | Install Inbox and opt in to its agent; staff permissions apply | Customers receive automatic answers |
| Shopify AI Toolkit | Developer’s AI coding tool, outside the admin | Supported coding tool and developer setup | Developer builds or manages store software |
ChatGPT for Shopify is useful when you want to work outside the admin. Without a store connection, you provide the product details or exported data yourself. Sidekick already has your store context and works beside the relevant admin fields.
For example, ChatGPT can draft an email from a supplied campaign brief, while Shopify’s editor puts generated text directly into the campaign. Shopify also documents an authorised ChatGPT plugin that can build and manage a store. A connected plugin has different access from an ordinary chat where you paste text.
Shopify Magic for Product Copy, Email and Images
Shopify Magic is the familiar name for AI content tools whose current Help Centre instructions often name Sidekick. In Products, the Generate text control drafts a description from the details and tone you supply. In Shopify Messaging, the same kind of control creates subject lines and email body text.
Here’s an illustrative rewrite, not a captured Shopify output. Suppose the confirmed supplier details are “500 ml stainless-steel bottle, screw lid, navy”.
- Before: “A great bottle for every adventure.”
- After: “Carry 500 ml in a navy stainless-steel bottle with a screw lid.”
The second version gives customers facts they can use. Ask for a plain tone and supply verified specifications. A prompt such as “Write a restock subject line for our navy bottle” gives the email tool a concrete topic.
In the file editor, AI can replace a background or change a scene from your prompt. Compare the edited product with the original photograph before saving it. A changed colour or altered lid can misrepresent what arrives.
Shopify warns that generated descriptions can invent benefits or borrow facts about similar products. The text generator doesn’t establish that a claim matches your supplier’s specification sheet. Generic prompts also produce generic wording, so review both the factual claims and the voice before publication.
Shopify Sidekick as an Admin Assistant
Sidekick answers store questions and prepares actions inside the admin. It can create reports, fill forms and open the page where you need to work.
These hypothetical merchant requests show the difference between asking for information and changing the store:
- “Show total sales by product for the past 30 days.” Sidekick can create a report or data exploration using Shopify’s reporting tools. Check the period and metric before using the result to reorder stock.
- “Prepare a 10% order discount for all customers.” Sidekick can prepare a supported discount. Review eligibility and the discount settings before saving it.
If you can’t find the right screen, ask Sidekick to take you there. Its navigation help removes the need to describe every menu path yourself.
Shopify’s Sidekick guidance says store changes need your approval. Preparing an order edit or policy draft doesn’t apply it until you confirm the change. Staff access still depends on their permissions. Sidekick works for the merchant and doesn’t handle customer conversations on the merchant’s behalf.
The Shopify AI Toolkit
The developer toolkit connects your AI coding tool to Shopify’s documentation and validation tools. It can look up API schemas and check GraphQL queries. Liquid template validation helps catch theme errors. It also supports store-management tasks through an authenticated Shopify command-line connection, with the user deciding when to execute them.
A developer can use it when building an app, changing a theme or checking whether generated code fits Shopify’s APIs. The toolkit can reach current reference material instead of relying entirely on the coding tool’s remembered platform details.
A non-technical merchant can leave the toolkit to their developer. You don’t need to install it to use Sidekick or generate a product description. Ask your developer for the business change you need, and review the resulting store behaviour before release.
Building a Shopify Store With AI
Shopify’s AI Store Builder generates store designs from a short business description. Describe your range and the kind of shop you run, choose a design and then finish the store’s content and settings.
For an existing English-language storefront, Shopify’s Help Centre places personalised theme generation in the Shopify app or mobile admin browser. It lists the trial, Basic, Grow and Advanced plans for that workflow. Previously generated themes remain available to preview from desktop.
Sidekick can also generate individual theme blocks, such as a product information panel. That requires a compatible theme and the right editing permissions. Starter doesn’t support this block-generation workflow.
Human work still includes adding accurate product data, checking delivery and returns information and reviewing how the store works on a phone. Shopify warns that generated block code needs testing. Preview the design and complete a test purchase before publishing it to customers.
Shopify’s work with OpenAI makes eligible products discoverable through ChatGPT, with purchases completing through the merchant’s online-store checkout. Don’t assume that this gives every Shopify store Instant Checkout inside a conversation. Read the guide to selling through ChatGPT shopping answers for that channel’s details.
Shopify also opens catalogues to AI agents through its commerce tools, explained in the guide to Shopify catalogue access for agents.
Where Shopify AI Stops
Sidekick’s boundary is its merchant-facing role. Shopper questions belong in a customer-facing conversation, and Shopify already has an option for that: the opt-in Inbox agent.
Shopify’s Inbox documentation says the agent answers from the catalogue, policies and Knowledge Base material. It can recommend products and use cited web search for qualitative information about a specific catalogue product. Policy answers alone therefore aren’t a reason to assume you need a separate app.
A dedicated shopping agent becomes relevant when you want customers to move from catalogue questions to product comparisons and an order in the same chat. Evaluate the supported purchase flow and the sources the agent uses, including your product feed and policy documents. The guide to shopping assistance on Shopify covers that choice.
Rewriting a whole catalogue needs a controlled bulk-editing workflow. A product description control generates text, but it doesn’t by itself manage supplier facts across hundreds of products or provide batch approval. A catalogue tool or a developer-run process can handle that job. Read the guide to automating product descriptions for the full workflow.
Visibility in AI shopping answers is another job. Catalogue distribution helps products become available to channels, while feed quality and clear product information help those channels interpret them. An AI visibility tool measures appearances and referrals. It can’t promise that an assistant will recommend your product.
Use the built-in tools for the admin work they already handle. Add another tool when its documented workflow fills the specific job you need, such as batch catalogue editing or completing a customer purchase in chat.
