Shopify MCP: What Online Retailers Need to Know
Before AI agents shop your store, see how Shopify MCP servers, Shopify Catalog and agentic storefronts expose your products and checkout.
Shopify MCP connects AI assistants to Shopify tools and data, with different access for shoppers, developers and merchants. Shopify Catalog and agentic storefronts distribute eligible products to outside AI channels. Your admin controls that distribution, while each channel has its own checkout and buyer eligibility.
What MCP Means on Shopify
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standard way for an AI assistant to call tools and retrieve information from another system. Shopify’s servers have different jobs, so connecting one doesn’t give an assistant every kind of store access.
| Shopify connection | What it does | Who uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Storefront Catalog MCP | Searches one merchant’s products and retrieves product details | Developers building shopper-facing agents |
| Cart MCP and Checkout MCP | Manage baskets and checkout through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Developers building purchasing flows |
| Customer Accounts MCP | Handles authenticated customer requests such as order status and account details | Developers building signed-in customer help |
| Dev MCP | Supplies Shopify developer documentation and API schemas | Developers using AI coding assistants |
| Authorised store-management integration | Reads or changes store data within approved permissions | Merchants and authorised staff |
Shopify has removed the legacy Storefront MCP catalogue and cart tools from /api/mcp. Their replacements use /api/ucp/mcp, while the policy and FAQs tool remains on the older endpoint. An old Storefront MCP tutorial can therefore describe tools that a developer must replace.
The Shopify Dev MCP server helps a coding assistant such as Claude Code look up documentation and validate work against Shopify schemas. A merchant rarely needs it directly unless they’re developing an app or storefront. Shopify’s AI Toolkit also includes authenticated store-management tooling, which is a separate capability from reading developer documentation.
Connecting Claude or another assistant to your admin gives it the access you approve for that integration. Read access lets it view data. Write access can let it edit store data or take actions, within both the integration’s access and the staff member’s permissions. Orders and settings are admin-side concerns, separate from shopper-facing catalogue and basket tools.
Use Shopify’s official integration and grant the narrowest access your task needs. Decline a write-access request when a read-only task is sufficient. Shopify says reducing an approved access level requires uninstalling the integration and reconnecting with less access.
Shopify Catalog and Agentic Storefronts
Shopify Catalog structures eligible product information so outside AI channels can discover your range. It supplies product details and keeps price and availability data updated. Agentic storefronts is the admin feature for managing that access and direct checkout where a channel supports it.
For eligible stores, agentic storefronts is active by default. Open Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin to see channel eligibility and settings. The store owner has access, and staff need the relevant product-view and Agentic permissions.
The default Allow Shopify to manage for me setting includes enrolment in future channels. To select channels yourself, turn that setting off, change the available Catalog access or checkout controls and save. Stores using the separate Agentic plan have different setup rules, including direct checkout being off by default.
Shopify Agentic Commerce in ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity
Shopify connects eligible merchants to ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, but their checkout paths differ. ChatGPT sends a customer to the merchant’s online store checkout in an in-app browser or a new tab. Copilot supports Shopify-powered direct checkout for eligible stores, with an option to send customers to the store instead.
Shopify’s Help Center requires stores selling through its ChatGPT channel to sell to United States customers, even when the merchant is based elsewhere. For Copilot, direct checkout appears only for customers in the United States. An Australian store’s eligibility therefore doesn’t establish that these purchasing paths reach Australian shoppers.
Shopify’s launch announcement also names Perplexity. Its Perplexity guidance describes product discovery through Shopify data and a separate Merchant Program for participation. The Help Center’s main agentic storefronts list names ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, plus Meta. Don’t assume a Perplexity checkout switch exists because an announcement names the platform.
For an Australian audience, confirm the buyer countries and checkout path for each channel shown in your admin. A product appearing in an AI answer and a customer completing an in-channel purchase are different outcomes. The ChatGPT shopping guide explains that channel’s customer journey.
What Merchants Control
Merchants control their product information, Catalog distribution and supported channel checkout settings. Those controls affect what an AI channel receives, but they don’t guarantee a recommendation or a particular search position.
- Keep product descriptions and category data complete, with clear size and colour options and correct stock availability.
- Use Shopify Catalog Mapping when product details live in custom fields or need custom grouping.
- Decide whether Catalog sends compare-at prices alongside current selling prices.
- Select channel access and automatic enrolment through Sales channels > Agentic.
- Turn direct checkout on or off for supported channels. ChatGPT has no direct checkout toggle because it uses your online store checkout.
In a hypothetical clothing store, an agent can match a request for a navy cotton shirt when the listing identifies its colour, material and available sizes. A vague title such as “Weekend favourite” supplies fewer facts for that decision.
Use the Catalog search preview in Sales channels > Agentic to inspect relevant queries and listing insights. Missing variant details or store policies give you a concrete correction to make. Outside channels can reorder the results, so the preview is a directional view of discovery.
Turning off Catalog access doesn’t hide a product from open-web crawling. Shopify’s Unlisted product status can hide it more broadly, but also removes it from search engines, sitemaps and your store search. Weigh that consequence before changing product visibility.
Where a Store Agent Fits
An outside AI channel helps customers discover your store from another app. An on-site shopping agent helps customers who are already on your site explore your range and buy there. A merchant can use both for different parts of the customer journey.
shoppa is an on-site AI shopping agent that helps your customers find and compare products, then add to their basket and pay in the chat. It uses your own catalogue and documents and supports order questions and returns after the sale. The conversation stays on your site in your branding.
The Shopify integration guide covers adding an agent to your store. For Shopify’s merchant-facing AI features, read Shopify AI tools. Start with the decision you control: which outside channels receive your products and how customers get help once they reach your site.
