ChatGPT Ads for Australian Retailers: 2026 Guide
Ads now sit inside AI answers. See how OpenAI ads, Google AI Mode ads, Copilot and Perplexity placements work, and which your store can buy today.
ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements below AI answers, and Australian retailers can buy them through OpenAI’s self-service Ads Manager. Google also runs ads inside AI Overviews in Australia, while Microsoft Advertising reaches Copilot conversations. Perplexity has withdrawn its advertising programme.
The buying route differs for each platform. You can test ChatGPT directly, use eligible Google campaigns for AI Overviews or extend Microsoft campaigns into Copilot. Google documents AI Mode ads as a US test, so don’t treat Australian access to AI Mode as local ad availability.
How ChatGPT Ads Work
ChatGPT ads appear below the answer in a separate unit labelled as sponsored. OpenAI’s published example shows a Heirloom Groceries product card beneath a ChatGPT response. The label separates the paid placement from the answer above it.
The ad unit contains the advertiser’s name and logo, a headline, descriptive copy and an image. Its link takes the customer to the advertiser’s landing page. Paying for that unit doesn’t buy a recommendation inside the answer.
OpenAI says its advertising system is separate from the chat model. Advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT’s responses. Eligible users on Free and Go can see ads. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts remain ad-free, as do accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.
Advertisers buy through OpenAI’s own Ads Manager. Create a campaign with an objective and budget, choose locations, then add ad groups and creative. Delivery requires approval and completed account and billing requirements.
Matching uses the conversation’s intent alongside the ad and landing-page content. Advertisers can add context hints about relevant topics, but these aren’t exact-match keywords or a guarantee of appearing beside a particular conversation. Personalisation can add signals from the user’s wider ChatGPT experience when enabled.
ChatGPT ads cost depends on the auction and billing option. OpenAI supports impression-based and valid-click buying, with conversion optimisation also available. A conversion objective doesn’t automatically mean you pay per purchase. Keep the charging unit separate from the outcome you measure.
An agency manages the same campaign work for a retailer without an in-house team. Agree who owns the account, who approves product claims and how spending limits work. Ask the agency to separate its management fee from ad spend and report purchases alongside traffic.
Are ChatGPT Ads Available in Australia
Yes, ChatGPT ads are available in Australia for eligible users, and Australian businesses have self-service advertiser access. These are separate questions. A user’s plan decides whether they can see ads, while the billed business’s location affects Ads Manager eligibility.
OpenAI’s regional expansion announcement reports availability in more than 60 countries. Its named Asia-Pacific launches include Australia and New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and India. The expansion also covers Indonesia and Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan.
OpenAI’s Ads Manager country list includes Australia alongside the United States and Canada, the United Kingdom, European countries and other markets. The legal entity advertising and being billed must be based in a listed available country. Creating an account alone doesn’t establish eligibility everywhere.
Australia has already launched, so an Australian launch date is no longer the decision. Follow OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability list and official advertising announcements for changes to markets and formats. Target countries where your store can fulfil orders, with landing pages that state delivery costs and returns terms.

Unpaid product recommendations follow a different route from advertising. Read how ChatGPT recommends products for that distinction.
Ads in AI Overviews and Google AI Mode
Google places Search and Shopping ads within AI Overviews when the query and answer make them relevant. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns qualify after winning the auction.
Australia is eligible in English on mobile and desktop. Ads above or below an overview use existing campaigns wherever AI Overviews runs.
Broad match or keywordless targeting supports matching longer questions. AI Max and Performance Max are eligible approaches. Turning on a setting doesn’t guarantee an AI placement.
AI Mode is Google’s conversational search surface, where people can ask follow-up questions. Google describes ads integrated into or below its responses, using eligible Performance Max, Shopping and broad-match Search campaigns. Its advertising guidance describes testing in English in the United States.
For an Australian campaign, distinguish AI Mode access from access to ads inside it. Keep local spending decisions on the surfaces with Australian ad availability. A store selling into the US has a different audience decision from one delivering only within Australia.
You cannot target only AI Overviews or opt out of that placement separately. Google lacks separate performance reporting for ads inside AI Overviews. Assess the eligible campaign’s results without claiming that every extra sale came from the AI placement.
The AI Overviews guide covers unpaid citations. Paid placement and an unpaid citation are separate outcomes.
AI Max for Search
AI Max for Search expands query matching and can generate ad text or choose landing pages within an existing Google Search campaign. It changes how the campaign finds customers. It is not a separate advertising destination.
Search term matching uses broad match alongside information from your assets and landing pages. Text customisation creates ad copy from existing ads and site content. Final URL expansion can send a customer to a relevant page beyond the URL you originally supplied.
That gives Google more discretion over queries, wording and destinations. Final URL expansion requires text customisation. Pinned assets can be bypassed when Google chooses a more relevant URL, so a carefully approved headline doesn’t control every expanded placement.
A hypothetical furniture store can accept broader searches for small dining tables while excluding its support pages from landing-page selection. If the store keeps branded searches in a separate campaign, campaign-level brand exclusions help prevent overlap. Brand inclusions can narrow the intended brands.
Use the search terms report to inspect matched queries. Filter the match type to AI Max and add the Source column. The Search terms and ad combinations view connects a query with its headline and landing page.
From that view, add an irrelevant term as a negative keyword or exclude an unsuitable URL. The landing pages report identifies pages selected by AI Max, and asset reports identify Google-created text. Review those choices against the products you sell and the promises you can keep.
Start with the controls that matter to your store. Exclude pages that cannot complete the purchase, retain suitable brand rules and disable an optional feature if you need tighter control. Measure completed orders before expanding the test.
Copilot Ads and Perplexity Ads
Copilot ads use Microsoft Advertising to place labelled sponsored content in relevant conversations. Microsoft says sponsored content does not influence organic responses. Its rollout covers English-speaking markets including Australia. Australian retailers can use Microsoft Advertising.
Search and Shopping campaigns provide a route into those experiences. Retail Offer Highlights can show product benefits such as free delivery or in-store pickup on product detail pages in Copilot, Edge and Bing. Advertisers supply those benefits through Microsoft Merchant Center.
Use accurate product details and suitable geographic targeting, then judge the campaign by orders and margin. Access to Copilot inventory doesn’t guarantee a particular conversation placement. Microsoft’s Australian advertiser support covers getting started with Search and Shopping.
Perplexity’s original experiment used sponsored follow-up questions and paid media beside an answer. It began in the US, with sponsored labels. Perplexity said its technology generated the follow-up answers and sponsors did not write or edit them.
That experiment is no longer an active buying option for Australian retailers. WIRED reports from an executive press briefing that Perplexity has abandoned advertising in favour of its subscription business. Leave sponsored-question spending out of an active media plan.
Deciding Whether to Advertise in AI Answers
Test AI-answer advertising when the audience is available locally, your product data is accurate and you can measure the purchase after the click. A new placement needs its own business case. Moving budget there because the interface uses AI doesn’t establish a return.
Choose one surface and a product category with clear stock and delivery terms. Set a spending cap, retain a comparable existing campaign and define the result that would justify expansion. Use completed orders and contribution margin after returns, with agency fees included in the calculation.
Confirm that campaign links retain tracking parameters and purchase events reach your analytics. OpenAI’s Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks and spend, with conversions available through conversion measurement. Compare platform reports with your own order records because attribution rules can credit the same purchase in different ways.
For Google, the lack of separate AI Overviews reporting limits what you can conclude about that placement alone. AI Max reporting helps explain which queries and landing pages changed. It does not turn every campaign improvement into proof that an AI answer caused it.
Clean product information supports paid shopping placements and unpaid discovery. Keep availability and price consistent with the destination page, supply useful images and describe delivery accurately. The Google product feed guide covers the feed work behind Shopping ads.
For unpaid mentions, use the generative engine optimisation guide. For paid testing, begin with a channel your Australian business can buy and your customers can see. Expand only when the orders justify the full cost.
